The Mt. Diablo Educators Association (MDEA) is currently operating under a one year agreement with MDUSD that expires at the end of the 2024-25 school year. On December 18th both sides will “daylight” articles in the contract that they seek to negotiate changes in. Bargaining will begin on January 8th of next year.
The one year deal signed earlier this year secured a 9% pay hike for all MDEA members. MDEA members in a previous contract fight won 100% health care for members and dependents (based on Kaiser rates). This win however is only secure through the 2025-26 school year.
MDEA members’ top priorities in this coming contract fight are to win wage hikes in the face of rising cost-of-living, to make permanent the health care concessions from previous fights, and to lower class sizes.
The fight for substantial class size reductions, as Bay Area Educators United has argued since the day it formed, is one that can only be won outside the collective bargaining process–through a political struggle of educators across districts for much greater funding for public schools from the state. For this reason, it is safe to say that the main union demands in this contract battle will be for wage increases and an extension of 100% paid health care benefits.
MDEA will celebrate the daylighting of contract articles by mobilizing a mass rally at the MDUSD school board meeting on December 18th beginning at 5:45. In the spirit of solidarity, we hope educators from other districts can show up to show support. MDUSD district offices are located at 1936 Carlotta Drive in Concord.
