Money for Jobs and Education, not for Bombs and Occupation

As educators, we are committed to ensuring that our actions and investments reflect our values. We urgently demand that CalSTRS divest from companies that support the Israeli military and contribute to the ongoing occupation and human rights violations in Palestine. Even though these investments represent a small fraction of CalSTRS’ total investment portfolio, they stand in stark contradiction to our values as educators committed to justice and equality.
The children of Gaza are in immediate and grave danger. Since October 2023, approximately 16,000 children have been killed, over 17,000 have been orphaned or separated from their families, and more than 1,000 have lost one or both legs. Furthermore, about 90% of schools and all universities in Gaza have been destroyed, depriving children of their right to education. These investments enable the oppression and mass murder of Palestinian children and civilians, perpetuating a humanitarian crisis that demands immediate action. We cannot allow our pension funds to be linked to the ongoing violence and destruction that is robbing these children of their futures.
We call on CalSTRS to reinvest in ethical and socially responsible ventures that align with principles of human rights and justice for all. Furthermore, we urge the California Federation of Teachers to adopt our proposed resolution, which highlights the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the urgent need for principled investment practices. By divesting from companies that facilitate apartheid, occupation, and genocide, we can ensure that our pension funds are not complicit in these atrocities and truly reflect our dedication to a just and peaceful future for all children.
